The most popular series of robotic vacuums is the Roomba line from iRobot. With several models to choose from that look very similar and seem to offer the same functionality, it's difficult to know which model will meet your needs. This article gives a review of what you should consider when choosing the best robotic vacuum for you.
To start, there are three basic brands of robotic vacuums from iRobot. The Roomba is the most well known and is a household robot vacuum, the Scooba which is basically a robot mop, and the Dirt Dog is a robotic shop sweeper. Within the Roomba brand is also the "Pets" line that includes special accessories for dealing with animal hair and fur. Otherwise, it's the same as the regular models.

Within these types the models are very similar and vary in the accessories that come with each and the extra bells and whistles that advances in technology make available. One thing to note is that the newer Roomba models are called the Discovery series - this is important because iRobot makes all accessories for newer models compatible with each other but they're only compatible among other Discovery series robots.
The main accessories are remote controls for starting, scheduling, and controlling cleaning, scheduling systems that allow you to run the Roomba automatically on specific days and times, faster charging longer life batteries, and virtual walls that allow you to confine the Roomba to certain areas of a room or your home.
The more expensive models tend to have more accessories and more recent technology than the less expensive models but they all do basically the same thing. Which model you choose is more a matter of what kind of challenges you're going to put in front of the Roomba and what kind of bells and whistles you want than a matter of functionality.
For example, if you have a larger house you'll probably need more virtual walls to better control Roomba's cleaning rounds. If your chief concern is pet hair then the Pet line would be a good choice and if you want to control the Roomba as it vacuums or set the schedule remotely then choose the model with the advanced remote control.
In general, the newer models are more reliable and have more polished functionality but, if your robotic cleaning needs are very basic, an older (and less expensive) model might be all you need.
